The SVN mentorship programme with City Gates Academy began in September 2022 and due to its great success was renewed and continued for school year 2023-2024. The purpose and objectives were to provide support to the teachers of City Gates Academy in the Philippines by way of mentoring, guiding and offering professional advice which would enhance teaching and learning at the academy. The SVN mentors were paired with a maximum of two teachers from the Philippines and met on average twice a month for between 30 to 40 minutes per session.
Quote from T. Winny:
“I enjoy mentorship sessions with Ms Jane because she is generous enough to give me ideas on how to improve my lessons by doing practical activities and strategies on classroom management. One of the most helpful ideas I got from her is using "good behaviour punch card" where my students became really motivated to do well at school and complete 10 stamps to receive a reward.”
Quote from T. Tina:
“SVN mentorship has been a big us to as teachers. Personally my mentor (Judith) is not just a mentor in terms of academic on how am I going to improve my teaching strategies. But also I consider her as my spiritual mentor. Thank you SVN for letting this amazing mentor be part of our academy. We really appreciate them.”
The mentorship programme has proven to be invaluable to the teachers and students. Prior to this, the teachers were relying on the Principal, Lynette Orange, as their only source for advice and guidance for lesson content. Now, the teachers have the ability to tap into the knowledge and experience of five teachers who could offer fresh ideas, strategies and suggestions which are having a positive impact on the teaching and learning standards in the classrooms.
Topics have included lesson planning, behaviour management, time management and a whole lot more. In addition to this, we know that the SVN team are regularly praying for the teachers and City Gates Academy, which means a lot to us.

“My mentor is really helpful because they help me to develop in my profession and learn a lot of new things especially some strategies to teach effectively and especially for catching the attention of the students.”
