John Perkins visited Cambodia. He went with Mission Direct for a two week project helping to build a floating school in a village of Vietnamese exiles. They are marginalised and forced to live in a village on a lake at Siem Reap on the river Mekong. There are 60 or so children and 2 teachers who are waiting for this to be finished and so on a couple of afternoons some of them also helped train these teachers.

The team of five teachers had complementary skills but the same faith and sense of humour- a winning combination and much was achieved! We were warmly welcomed in the school during the teaching week and the children were very responsive. During the training week, the 18 young teachers were so keen to try new ideas. One said " Maybe I could go to university but you 5 teachers have over 100 years of experience which is much better!"
We were also able to fund new books for three school libraries, the meals for the teacher training days and pay for a part-time librarian for the next year. |
