In November 2023 a team of four teachers from SVN went out to Kumi town in Uganda. Working with Mission Direct, who have had many years’ experience in the town, we were able to go into two schools and work with teachers at Primary 1 and Primary 3 levels. There were generally well over 100 pupils in each class with two teachers. Towards the end of our time there we organised a Teachers Conference for 34 Primary 1 and Primary 3 teachers in the town. We concentrated on basic phonics work and some Numeracy strategies. This was very well received.
Last year I went back, again with Mission Direct, and was able to do a little follow on work with Primary 1 and 2 teachers at Kumi Primary School. It was pleasing to see they had taken on board some of our suggestions.
This year the plan is to return at the end of July for two weeks and work with Kindergarten and Primary 1 to 7 teachers. I would love it if there could be a small group going and working together.
